I know, right? Way to completely self-destruct. I wonder if it's due to the writers strike forcing them to condense and speed things along, or if it really was just this poorly thought out.

I bet the writers' strike played a part, because that plot came out of *nowhere*--but at the same time I can't imagine a way they could have done it that would have made me believe it, based on what we've known of Zack over three seasons.

I think it would have been possible with proper development. I mean, he's not exactly big on human sentiment and is weirdly clinical in his approach to... everything, including death. And I'm sure they could have used his experience in Iraq. But as it was, it just came completely out of nowhere and made no kind of sense on a character level.

No, those are all true of Zack...Still, he helps catch murderers all the time, which argues for some kind of rationale on his part that murderers should generally not be allowed to just kill people--so why is this not true of Gormogon? I also don't even understand what his logic behind the murder was anyway; does he really think the FBI is some kind of secret organization? Even though he works with Booth? Or was I just too appalled to pay enough attention to his explanation?

Apparently, according the show-runner there was a much more comprehensive plan to show Zack's PTSD from the war and really justify him being the murderer, which could have been really cool, but it got derailed by the strike. Still, I think they should have carried the storyline over to the next season then and wrapped it up properly, because it was just ridiculous.

Agreed. It really didn't work to shove it in at the very end like that. And if they'd been able to do what it sounds like they wanted to, maybe it would have worked!
