So...I probably should not refer to Horatio as my Elizabethan boyfriend, you know, out loud.
Some friends and I saw a really not-very-good production of Hamlet this weekend, which is doubly bad because we've enjoyed this company very much in the past. I can't really put my finger on why it was so not-good, exactly, except that it was boring. Any Hamlet that starts reminding me of that MST3K episode where one of them cracks, "Is there a word in the English language Hamlet hasn't used?" is probably a bad Hamlet.
Horatio was disappointing because, as seen above, I love him a lot, and this Horatio didn't even really seem like he was especially good friends with Hamlet. But Laertes was the worst; he was like a cyborg attempting to impersonate a human. When Ophelia stormed in, in the midst of her madness, he started making these gutteral noises, his eyes wide open, his head jerking slightly, and I realized they were supposed to be *sobs*. That was definitely a low point.
Oh well. That just means I haven't yet seen the best Hamlet I am like to see, right?
