the summer of great expectations
Oxford University Press has chosen Great Expectations as its summer read, and here's a blog post about the appeal of the novel, to coincide:

I'm really glad that I've had the opportunity to teach this novel recently. I read it for the first time in college; it was rather a rush job, and I came away with some vague memories of having to write about the language in the encounter between Joe and Miss Havisham, and the fact that there were two endings, but not much else. I probably wouldn't have reread it on my own, simply because there are so many Victorian novels I haven't read yet - so I'm very grateful that I got to reread it slowly for class, and pick up on the book's humor and its heart.

I'm curious to re-read Great Expectations now that I've gone through Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" series :-) It would certainly be an interesting experiment!

I haven't read them! But from what I know of the series, I can imagine it would be. :)

Oh, they're great fun. Hope you get a chance to read them sometime. And thanks for the links -- I can use them on my blog!
