so...
Feeling unexpectedly meh about the announcement; not sure why. I don't think I was hoping for any really outside-the-box picks (because really, what were the chances?), but I guess I was kind of hoping for someone I'd never heard of, someone brand-new to be excited about.

I think I know what you mean. I don't feel it's a terrible choice but not overly excited about it either. Matt's recordings were really moving though. He seems so sad but ok about it too, hard to explain.

Yeah, I'd like to be more excited - it's not even that I haven't liked Peter Capaldi before! I suppose it's possible that I've just moved straight on to being sad about Matt's leaving, without realizing it... :)

Oh man, that would have been *amazing* - but then, I basically want her to be in all the things!

I was really kind of hoping for something out of left field (I was a fan of the movement to make Idris Elba the new Doctor, personally) that would really shake up the series and the format, because I'm mostly bored by another slightly manic/quirkly/screechy thin man. Nothing against Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi, both of whom I LOVE as actors, but I'm pretty bored with the Doctor right now. :/ I felt like the difference between Nine and Ten was SO GREAT and the change between Ten and Eleven was so little, comparatively, and without knowing how Peter Capaldi will play the Doctor and just based on looks... bleh.

Yeah. I didn't bother hoping for someone like Idris Elba, because that was never going to happen even if loads of people wanted it to. But I wanted someone...else, even though I don't know who that was. :)

Personally, I think there's a big difference between Ten and Eleven (I've spilled a lot of metaphorical ink about it in my "eleventh doctor" tag); I feel like people tend to go "aw man, they're both wacky and have interesting hair!" and assume they're a lot more similar than they actually are? But something totally different would have been great.

Ten and Eleven are totally different. Personality-wise, and actor-wise. Matt is so much more physical comedy, and in some ways, older than David. I had my doubts when Matt was cast, but he has an alien quality to him, and his face is almost plastic. To me, he always seemed older and more burdened than Ten. It took a few episodes, but he won me over. I liked that he had shed that self-loathing, and boil-over anger ("angry god") they wrote for Ten. I wonder if they are going back to the more avuncular Dr., which would suit me fine. This every-companion-must-fall-for-the-doctor thing gets annoying. I'd do backflips if they could get someone onboard who can write a decent female character to be a platonic companion. I loved the way Donna got on with David.

J told me they'd announced the new Doctor, and I was like, "Is he sexy?" and he was like, "Um." So we started catching up on Eureka. Maybe I'll get back into it someday... I might be too superficial, though.

I'm not sure I've ever found the Doctor particularly "sexy"! All three New Who Doctors have been odd, quirky, kind of funny-looking guys who are enormously appealing - none of them have matinee good looks. Which is one of the things I like about the show.

I just got season 5 of Eureka from the public library, funnily enough! I'm sure I've missed some episodes, but I can't say that I watch the show for plot, so I'm doing okay. :)

Still not ginger, even!
Glad I'm not alone in this. Not excited. I had never heard of Peter and fcol, he was in episodes as someone else already. How are they explaining that? Another old skinny white guy. and not even hawt.

I was *so* rooting for it to be Idris Elba. He oozes sexiness, has some acting chops, would be a good doctor, and played likeable guy flirting with the darkside really well on Luther.

He would also be a bold choice. They built it up so much... Will the next doctor be a woman? Ethnic... "Nah, just another old white guy--made ya look!"

OTOH, one good thing that could come out of this is a 55-year-old guy making eyes at a young lady would be creepy, so maybe they'll get away from "every companion is his twoo wuv" thing they got stuck in. Some older gents are still sexy, but I don't find him attractive in that way.

It's now canon that they can reincarnate into a woman--remember what he said about the Corsair? I'd love to see our doctor as "a very bad girl".

He's gonna kill fan fiction, I can't even imagine him slashed with Jack, and I can picture *everyone* (and *everything*) paired with Jack.

And he's STILL not ginger!!

Re: Still not ginger, even!
Well, Freema Agyeman and Karen Gillan were also in previous episodes (Karen was even in the same episode as Peter Capaldi!), and so was Eve Myles, so I figure they'll do what they always do: either they'll create some in-show reason for the similarity, or they won't. Either way, it hasn't killed the show so far.

And I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who will be able to ship Twelve and Jack. :) And Twelve/Clara (they've probably already started); after all, the Doctor is over a thousand years old, so a 55-year-old actor doesn't make much difference!

I wanted a change, certainly, but I don't actually think it was anyone involved with the show who was building up the possibility of casting someone different! It's like when Matt got cast, and everyone was upset that he wasn't Paterson Joseph - that would have been great, but he was never actually in the running, even if there were people "reporting" on his odds of getting the part.
